Embraer has partnered with the Brazilian arm of Portuguese energy company EDP to build a purely electric version of the EMB- Ipanema aerial application aircraft . The STOUT (Short Take-Off Utility Transport) is intended to replace the EMB- Bandierante (C-A) and EMB- Brasilia (C-) of the air force and is designed for use in the Amazon. It will have two turboprop engines and two electric motors on its high wing and will have a range of , nautical miles. Embraer and the Brazilian government intend to use the country's need for new military transportation to boost the development of hybrid-electric aircraft, a new form of aircraft that many believe holds promise for regional or commuter commercial passenger service due to to possibly lower fuel and maintenance costs, as well as a lower environmental impact.
